The Geneva International Motor Show is one of the world’s biggest car exhibitions — but until a couple of weeks ago, it had been on a five-year hiatus.

After the pandemic scuppered the event in 2020, 2021, and 2022, last year its organizers held a special one-off version in Qatar, rather than Switzerland.

But auto enthusiasts were back in force for this year’s show in Geneva, where the latest models from the likes of China’s BYD and Renault were on display.

Electric cars were again in the spotlight. While sales growth might be slowing in the US, it’s ramping up in Europe, where the EV market grew 62% last year, per World Economic Forum figures.

  • BYD Yangwang U8

    BYD's Yangwang U8 made its European debut

    BYD, which overtook Tesla as the world's top EV seller last year, showcased its premium Yangwang U8 SUV in Geneva.

    The enormous luxury vehicle sells in China for about 1 million yuan ($139,000), weighs about 3.5 tons, and can even float on water if it has to.

  • BYD Seal U

    BYD also showed off the Seal U plug-in hybrid.

    The Seal U runs off plug-in hybrid powertrains and goes on sale in Europe this year, as BYD bids to triple its share of Europe's EV market. It's positioning the car as a rival to other hybrids, including Nissan's Qashqai and Toyota's RAV4.

  • Dacia Spring EV

    Dacia revealed an updated Spring EV

    The Dacia Spring is Europe's third best-selling EV, behind the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, per data from Autocar.

    It's set to launch as a right-hand drive in the UK later this year and is expected to become the cheapest car available on sale there.

  • IM L6

    IM Motors showed off the L6, a Tesla Model 3 rival.

    The Chinese brand plans to launch its electric LS6 saloon in Europe next year. It'll be priced to compete with the Tesla Model 3, product manager Yude Lang told Auto Express.

  • Lucid Gravity SUV

    US brand Lucid brought its Gravity SUV to Europe

    Lucid Motors gave the continent the first look at its Gravity SUV in Geneva. It boasts a range of about 430 miles and can seat seven adults, the American EV maker said.

  • Lucid Air Sapphire

    Lucid also showed off its Air Sapphire sports EV

    The Air Sapphire can go from zero to 100 kilometers an hour (62 mph) in just two seconds and will start selling in Europe for an eye-watering 250,000 euros ($270,000).

  • MG Cyberster

    MG offered a sneak peek at its Cyberster convertible

    The Chinese-owned, UK-based carmaker — which counts IM Motors as its luxury arm — released new details about the Cyberster in Geneva. 

    The convertible EV will be able to go from zero to 60 mph in about three seconds, MG said.

  • MG3

    The hybrid MG3 also made its global debut

    Another MG car on show was its MG3 Hybrid Plus supermini, which will replace a petrol version.

    Geneva marked the world debut of the hybrid model, which goes on sale Europe for the first time this year.

  • Microlino Lite

    There were also tiny EVs like the Microlino Lite

    Swiss brand Micro unveiled its tiny Microlino Lite EV. It's 8 feet 2 inches long, 4 feet 11 inches high, and weighs just under 1,330 pounds.

    It's almost as ridiculous at the Citroen Ami.

  • Renault R5

    Renault electric R5 made a splash

    Renault gave the long-awaited R5 E-Tech its world premiere in Geneva. It's directly inspired by one of the French carmaker's most iconic and best-selling models, which launched in 1972.

  • Silence S04

    And finally here's another tiny car, the Silence S04.

    The S04 is designed to fit into motorcycle parking bays, but has features such as air conditioning and can reach up to 52 mph. It costs about $20,000 in Europe.
