LONDON – Nigel Farage has been struck by a milkshake wielded by a protestor in Newcastle as he campaigned for the European elections.
The Brexit Party leader was visiting the city ahead of the European elections, which take place on Thursday, when he was hit.
He was heard afterwards saying “this is a failure” and asking his security: “How did that happen?”
Several right-wing candidates for the European elections have been struck by milkshakes in recent weeks.
Far-right leader Tommy Robinson was the first to be struck, while Carl Benjamin, the UKIP candidate who joked about "raping" Labour MP Jess Phillips, has been struck in four separate incidents during his bid to become an MEP.
In the aftermath of the incident, Farage tweeted: "Sadly some remainers have become radicalised, to the extent that normal campaigning is becoming impossible."
"For a civilised democracy to work you need the losers [sic] consent, politicians not accepting the referendum result have led us to this."
A 32-year-old man was arrested for common assault after the incident, Northumbria Police said.
A spokesperson for Theresa May said on Monday that "The Prime Minister has been clear that politicians should be able to go about their work and campaign without harassment, intimidation and abuse."
