We’ve listed some of the most prestigious schools in the world attended by reigning monarchs and future world leaders from Jordan to the UK.

While some future monarchs studied at internationally renowned institutions like Eton and Harrow or elite boarding schools in Switzerland, others – like King Abdullah II of Jordan, were sent to smaller schools to start their education.

From St Edmund’s in Surrey to Lakefield in Ontario, here are 13 private schools that have been given royal approval, ranked by their annual tuition fees for full boarders.


13. Hill House School — Prince Charles

Hill House International Junior school was founded in Switzerland in 1949, but a branch in London opened in 1951. It was once attended by Prince Charles - the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II - before he moved on to Gordonstoun to complete his secondary education.

This small independent preparatory school in Surrey has a surprising royal past. St Edmund's was once attended by King Abdullah II of Jordan before moving to the US for high school.

11. École des Roches, Normandy, France

Marlborough wonTatler's Best Public School awardin 2015, and was attended by the Duchess of Cambridge. It is a favourite of the family, counting Princess Eugenie - daughter to the Duke of York and eighth in line to the British monarchy.

Princess Beatrice, the Duke of York's daughter and seventh in line to the throne, began attending St George's school in 2000. She completed A-levels in Drama, History and Film Studies, and was even named Head Girl.

8. Benenden

Benenden is the only girls' all-boarding school in the UK, and counts Princess Anne - Queen Elizabeth II's daughter - as one of its former pupils.

7. Gordonstoun, Scotland, UK

Gordonstoun's most famous past pupils are Prince Charles, and his brothers Andrew and Edward. Charles was the first British monarch to sit public examinations, taking his GCE O-level exams at Gordonstoun in 1965.

Charles didn't enjoy his time at the notoriously strict Scottish institution, famously calling it "Colditz in kilts."

6. Lakefield College School

Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, left Gordonstoun before completing his secondary school, and graduated from Lakefield in 1978. The Canadian boarding school is popular with royals, and also counts King Felipe VI of Spain as a former student.

Eton College is the UK's best-known private school. Both Princes Harry and William are former pupils, as well as former Prime Minister David Cameron, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, and Eddie Redmayne.

Harrow is popular with royals all over the world, and counts Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani - the current Emir of Qatar - as one of its former pupils, as well as members of the Jordanian royal family and Lord Nicholas Windsor, Queen Elizabeth II's first cousin. While many royals choose to study in Europe, some prefer an American education. King Abdullah II - the reigning monarch of Jordan - completed his high school education at boarding school Deerfield, before moving to the UK and attending the University of Oxford.

2. The New School at West Heath

According to its website, West Heath School caters for "a diverse range of needs for boys and girls age 11-19, many of whom have emotional and social communication difficulties." It counts Diana Spencer - the late Princess of Wales - as one of its former pupils.
