Jonathan Van Ness is Cosmopolitan’s UK’s first solo non-female cover star in 35 years.

Van Ness, who stars on the Netflix series “Queer Eye” as the show’s resident grooming expert, is featured on the cover of Cosmopolitan UK’s January issue wearing a peach-colored Christian Siriano gown, Nike sneakers, and tube socks.

Van Ness shared a photo of the Cosmopolitan UK cover on Monday, writing in an Instagram post that the dress was from designer Christian Siriano, who is known for designing with size and gender-inclusivity in mind.

The cover photo of Van Ness was captured by photographer Rachell Smith, as confirmed in an Instagram post from Cosmopolitan UK.

Boy band One Direction was featured on the cover of Cosmopolitan UK in December 2012, but Van Ness is the first non-female-identifying star to appear on the cover alone since Boy George in 1984, as pointed out by TIME.

In a tweet posted on Monday, Van Ness thanked the magazine for “showing more variations of beauty for young LGBTQ+ people.

In an October interview with The New York Times’ Alex Hawgood, Van Ness spoke about being HIV-positive. Van Ness also told Out Magazine’s Fran Tirado that he identifies as non-binary and genderqueer, and prefers to use male pronouns.

His Cosmopolitan cover is just one of several meaningful fashion statements the star has made in the past year. In September, Van Ness wore a hot-pink gown designed by Rochas at the 2019 Netflix Creative Arts Emmy After-Party in Los Angeles, California.

Van Ness wore the same pink dress that actress Jameela Jamil sported a few days earlier. Jamil later wrote in a tweet that Van Ness “wore it best.”
