• Moths love lamps.
  • Everyone knows that.
  • A new meme is all about the insects’ love of lamps.
  • The meme can be traced back to a Reddit post from July.
  • The jokes are excellent.

There’s no point in beating around the bush here: It hasn’t been an easy week to be online. But if there has been one redeeming reason to log on every day it’s been the moth memes – yes, the moth memes.

The concept is simple, really. Everyone knows that moths love lamps. That’s pretty much the whole joke.

The meme gained notable traction online this week, but its origins can be traced to a July Reddit post from user No_Reason27. The Redditor posted a close-up picture of what appeared to be a very large moth outside of their window to the r/Creepy subreddit.

But, as with all good memes, the origin is far less interesting than the jokes themselves.

Here are some of the best.

This tweet seems to directly recall the original Reddit post.

There's a fresh spin on the classics.

And biting social commentary on that friend who always has to pick the music you're in the car.

Some memes are downright silly.

Many reference pop culture.

Admittedly, in real life, moths are a nuisance.

They eat holes in your favorite wool sweater and ruin carpets. But the jokes. The jokes are so good.
