Special uniforms unveiled for the annual Army-Navy game

On Saturday, Army and Navy will face off on the football field for the 119th time.

As has become the norm in recent years, both academies will wear special uniforms for the game.

This week, Nike (Army) and Under Armour (Navy) unveiled this year’s uniforms and they do not disappoint. Take a closer look below.

The uniforms for the West Point cadets are designed to honor the 82nd Airborne Division from World War II

The helmet even has a pattern meant to look like the netting found on helmets during World War II.

Here is a closer look at the helmet logo.

And the jersey patch.

That logo is also on their undershirts.

A very large font is being used for the numerals.

Interestingly, the flag on the right sleeve has 48 stars, accurate to the time period. Also, nowadays we are used to seeing the stars on the right when the flag is depicted on the right side of either a uniform or a vehicle. This is supposed to make the flag appear to be moving forward. However, army uniforms during World War II, during allied operations, wore the flag with the stars on the left, so this is a nice, historically accurate detail.

The "Academy gold" in the Midshipmen's uniforms is a throwback to the uniform worn by Navy during the 1963 Army-Navy game.

That season, Navy finished the regular season ranked No. 2 before losing to No. 1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl. Roger Staubach won the Heisman Trophy.

While the "N" with the four stars on the shoulders is a detail from the 1963 uniform, the blue shoulders on the white jersey is actually designed to look like the Navy's dress white uniforms.

Also, the glossy yellow helmets were designed to give the throwback uniform "a futuristic twist."

Navy's anchor logo, seen on the sides of the helmet, is also found on the sleeves of the undershirts.

The gloves spell out "Beat Army."
