Triathlete Lotte Miller paused after the women's Olympic event Tuesday to offer a pep talk to a crestfallen rival, Claire Michel, who was the last person to cross the finish line at the Tokyo Games.
55 athletes from 31 nations took part in the event at the Odaiba Marine Park, which is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay, Japan.
21 were lapped or do not finish the event that featured a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer cycle, and a 10-kilometer run.
Bermuda representative Flora Duffy claimed gold with a total event time of one hour, 55 minutes, and 36 seconds. British athlete Georgia Taylor-Brown finished second for silver just over a minute behind Duffy, while Katie Zaferes, of the United States, came third for bronze.
Of the 34 competitors who finished the race, it was Belgium's Claire Michel who crossed the line last with a finishing time of two hours, 11 minutes, and five seconds – more than a quarter of an hour after the winner.
Not far from the finish, Michel dropped to the floor. Miller, the Norwegian who finished 24th with a time of two hours, two minutes, and 43 seconds, went over to console her.
"You're a f---ing fighter," Miller told Michel, who could be heard sobbing.
"This is Olympic spirit, and you've got it 100%," Miller added.

Approximately one-third of the Olympics has already been completed, but there are still many medals up for grabs at the world's premier sporting festival.
On day 7, Friday, events include men's individual golf final, the women's 100-meter freestyle swim final, and numerous athletics competitions, among other matches.
