A McDonald's employee fatally shot a woman who caused a "disturbance" in the North Carolina restaurant he worked in, police say.
The victim, 30-year-old Jacklyn Marie Reed of Johnson City, Tennessee, sustained one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene in Hendersonville, western North Carolina on Monday morning, police said.
Reed and another woman were arguing at a bus stop when the other woman went into the nearby McDonald's restaurant to separate herself from Reed, who followed her, the Hendersonville Police Department said.
A McDonald's manager separated the women, and Reed left the restaurant, the police said.
But Reed returned to the restaurant "shortly after" and was met by the manager and Sam Antwan Ivey, a McDonald's employee, resulting in a "disturbance," police said.
Reed reached out and touched Ivey, who shot her with a concealed handgun before fleeing the scene in his vehicle, police said.
"This was a matter-of-fact shooting," Police Chief Blair Myhand told NBC affiliate WYFF. "Based on what we see in surveillance video, this was a far over-reaction to the situation that was happening." Ivey injected himself into the situation when he shouldn't have, Myhand told WYFF.
Ivey was apprehended by police in the parking lot of his child's elementary school, police said. He was charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, and is being held without bond at the Henderson County Detention Facility, police said Monday late afternoon.
"This was a senseless cold-blooded crime," Myhand told WYFF.
Reed had been in Hendersonville for several days and police had received multiple calls about her "erratic and alarming behavior" over the weekend, Myhand told WYFF.
"This was a senseless act of violence in our community," Republican Congressman Chuck Edwards, who represents the 11th District of North Carolina and owns the franchise restaurant, told The Hendersonville Times-News.
"Our prayers are with the victim's family, and we have full confidence in law enforcement's investigation."
Insider has contacted McDonald's and Edwards for comment.
