One cadet was killed and 20 cadets and two soldiers were injured in a vehicle accident at a West Point Military Academy training site on Thursday, the school confirmed.

Emergency crews responded to the accident Thursday morning to the Camp Natural Bridge training site, the school said in a tweet. The accident occurred when a “light medium tactical vehicle” overturned en route to the training site. The vehicle is a truck with a 2.5-ton payload that often carries cargo or troops.

Military officials told reporters at a press conference that the injuries ranged from face abrasions to a broken arm.

They added that “it is not common for these vehicles to turn over,” but that the cadets’ route had been through hilly, mountainous terrain.

West Point added that all of the injured people have been taken to hospital, and the accident is under investigation.

"West Point officials thank local and state emergency responders for their assistance on the scene," the academy said.

Camp Natural Bridge is located in Highland Mills, New York, roughly 50 miles north of Manhattan.

There have been a number of deadly military vehicle accidents recently, many of which involved vehicles rolling over. Last month, one Marine was killed and six others injured when their light armored vehicle rolled over during training event at Camp Pendleton in California.
