It’s been a challenging year, if not decade, for short sellers.
Brad Lamensdorf runs the 10-year-old AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF (HDGE), a short only exchange-traded fund that aims to act as a hedge and provide downside protection in tricky market environments. The more a market falls, the more the fund benefits.
So when the US stock market plummeted at the start of the pandemic, the ETF returned 48%, while the S&P 500 fell 34%. However, the market soon returned to all-time highs, creating a tough environment for Lamensdorf, who oversees the $53 million ETF as well as an active long/short mutual fund.
