Shootings in Hanau, Germany, left at least nine people dead and five wounded, according to the local police. The suspect was found dead in his home in Hanau along with one other body.

The police said they did not think any gunmen were at large.

The German newspaper Bild reported that the shootings took place in two hookah bars in the city center. Hanau is located about 15 miles, or 25 kilometers, east of Frankfurt.

“A terrible evening,” Mayor Claus Kaminsky of Hanau told Bild. “It will certainly occupy us for a long, long time, and it will remain in our sad memories.”

The German broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk reported that the gunman or gunmen drove from the first location to the second.

The shootings occurred late Wednesday night local time, and the motive was not immediately clear.
