Motorola
  • Motorola’s new Razr was announced on September 9, and it will cost $1,400 when it lands in the fall. You’ll be able to buy the new Moto Razr from Best Buy, B&H, Amazon, Motorola’s website, AT&T, and T-Mobile.
  • The Moto Razr “2” comes just seven months after its first Razr revival was released in February 2020.
  • This new Razr comes with fresh features like 5G support, an updated camera, and upgraded parts inside for better performance.

It hasn’t even been a year since Motorola released its first Razr foldable smartphone, but the company has a brand new model, simply called the new Razr, that’s starting at $1,400 and will be released in the fall and available to buy from Best Buy, B&H, Amazon, Motorola’s website, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

The new Razr is a familiar device to the original, but it comes with a variety of updates, upgrades, and improvements.

Most notable is the newfound support for 5G networks, which is a requisite feature for a high-end phone these days. Still, just note that 5G networks are far and few between at the moment, and there’s no real telling when it’ll become more available. T-Mobile users will have the best chance of connecting to T-Mobile’s low-band (slow) 5G network, but it hasn’t impressed reviewers and journalists so far, barely showing better speeds than the current 4G LTE connection standard.

The new Moto Razr will work best — for 5G and 4G LTE — on AT&T and T-Mobile, but it won’t work as well on Verizon as it doesn’t include the necessary bands for Verizon to function at full capacity and speeds.

The 48-megapixel camera system is also a a major upgrade over the original's 16-megapixel camera. With that said, megapixels aren't everything, and only a photo shoot will tell whether the camera is any good.

New Moto Razr (2020) specs:

  • Screen: 6.2-inch POLED, 2.7-inch display external cover display
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G
  • Memory and storage: 8GB RAM, 256GB of storage
  • Cameras: 48-megapixel main camera, 20-megapixel selfie camera
  • Battery and charger: 2,800mAh battery, 15W charger included
  • 5G: Sub-6GHz (mid-range and low-end 5G networks).

The Snapdragon 765G processor — a fast mid-range chip that supports 5G — may raise eyebrows for a device that demands well north of $1,000 where you'd expect the flagship Snapdragon 865 processor. Only real-life experience will tell whether the 765G a suitable chip for daily life and that price tag.

But, you're not just paying for the processor when you buy the new Moto Razr — you're mostly paying for the design and engineering to make it a viable daily-driver smartphone with a screen that folds in half. Motorola claims the new hinge design can last 200,000 folds and unfolds — the equivalent of 100 folds per day for five years.

As a result of the hinge and its foldable nature, the new Moto Razr isn't totally water resistant, and it doesn't come with an official IP water resistance rating that's standard on flagship phones. Still, the company has added a water repellent coating inside and out to prevent water damage from light water exposure, like splashes or rain.

The overall design is somewhat sleeker and more modern than the original that was released just seven months ago in February. Still, the new Razr includes the small exterior display that's helpful for quicker tasks, like replying to a message, checking notifications, and even acts as a viewfinder for selfies taken with the main camera.

We'll be trying out the new Razr for review and testing as soon as we can get our hands on one.
