Let’s face it, you’re hopefully going to have some free time over the next month or two with the holidays coming up. You might need a video game to really sink your teeth into.
Luckily, “Final Fantasy XV” is almost here. The latest entry in the legendary Japanese role-playing game series launches on November 29 after a decade of anticipation.
It’s a massive looking open-world adventure with some of the best visuals we’ve ever seen. Here is everything you need to know before jumping in:
This is Noctis, the main character of “Final Fantasy XV.” He’s the prince of the kingdom of Lucis, which is at war with the kingdom of Nilfheim.
The story promises plenty of political intrigue and melodrama in a world filled with magic. It’s not connected to the rest of the series, meaning you can follow the story without playing any other “Final Fantasy” games.
Noctis is joined on his journey through a world at war by his buddies Prompto (far left), Gladiolus (center left) and Ignis (far right). These four ridiculously-named friends fight alongside one another on a bro road trip.
No, really, it is a road trip. The world of “Final Fantasy XV” is a unique blend of fantasy magic and modern day cities and vehicles. It’s open for the player to freely explore — and it seems huge.
The car can also transform and fly. Just putting that out there.
If you thought you could avoid the inconvenience of running out of gas in a video game, you thought wrong.
“Final Fantasy” games typically have tons of combat, and this one is no different. However, instead of picking battle options from menus in turn-based encounters like older games in the series, Noctis and friends can freely move around and fight like an action game.
The player can wield a variety of different weapons and cast spells like in previous “Final Fantasy” games. This time, though, you’ll need to use your reflexes to dodge attacks and aim spells.
As usual, you’ll have to fight plenty of huge, terrifying bosses.
When you want to wind down with your bros, you can stop at roadside diners and play some pinball.
Don’t forget to pick up some snacks for the road.
If you couldn’t tell, this is a pretty amazing game, looks-wise.
This game was actually announced with a different title (“Final Fantasy Versus XIII”) before the 12th, 13th and 14th “Final Fantasy” games even came out in the U.S.! It went dark for several years before resurfacing as “Final Fantasy XV” a few years ago. It’s been a long road.
Needless to say, fans have been waiting for this game for a long time. Thankfully, the series staple of riding giant birds called Chocobos is in the new game.
“Final Fantasy XV” will hopefully provide the same kind of memorable storytelling and classic combat sequences as previous games in the series when it launches on November 29.
