A road trip is an amazing way to disconnect from the monotony of your daily work life.

There are plenty of beautiful driving options in the US, but for those itching to go overseas, consider Europe.

Here are 11 European roads you should drive in your lifetime:

AUSTRIA: Nockalm Road

The 21-mile road cuts through the Eastern Alps in Carinthia. It’s closed in the winter, but the winding highway has stunning views of the mountainous landscape and surrounding pine forests.

FRANCE: Route Gentelly

This highway in the South of France is absolutely gorgeous. Route Gentelly provides drivers (and bikers) sweeping views of the Côte d'Azur while cutting through picturesque carved tunnels.

Unlike roads further up north, Route Gentelly isn't subject to harsh winter weather and is open year round.

GERMANY: Fairy Tale Route

This is a great one if you're looking for kid-friendly road trips. It runs for 370 miles between Hanau and Bremen and has tons of stops along the way. You can see the castle of Trendelenburg, the inspiration for Rapunzel, or Steinau, where the Grimm brothers grew up.

GERMANY: Autobahn

We can't put together a list of the best road trips in Europe without including the Autobahn. Splurge on a nice rental and let that puppy fly.

ICELAND: Route One

Route One runs the entirety of the island, offering views of giant icebergs, waterfalls, and once active volcanos.

ITALY: Stelvio Pass

The winding road cuts through mountainous terrain in northern Italy and Switzerland. Go early to avoid tourists slowly passing through.

NORWAY: Atlantic Ocean Road

The Atlantic Ocean Road is a short, five-mile drive, but it's not the easiest in nasty weather. It runs through a series of islands, connecting Averøy and Eide, and provides lovely mountain and ocean views. Just save it for a sunny day.

PORTUGAL: Estoril Coast Drive

This is a great choice for a road trip because it starts in the city of Lisbon, so you really get your money's worth. Start in the capital city and drive to Cabo da Roca, pictured above, the most westerly point in mainland Europe, and enjoy the views of the coastal water along the way.

ROMANIA: Transfăgărășan Highway

The 56-mile highway features hairpin turns and cuts through Romania's Fagaras mountains. If you follow the road north, you'll get gorgeous views of Vidraru Lake.

SCOTLAND: Military Road or A39

This one is a little more remote, but head to Cairngorms National Park for a tranquil drive with views of grazing sheep, as recommended by Ultimate Drives.

SWITZERLAND: Grimsel Pass

If Stelvio doesn't do it for you, consider Grimsel Pass. The highway cuts through the Bernese Alps and is relatively traffic free.
