• Amazon says this year’s Prime Day was the biggest shopping day in the company’s history, despite technical glitches that prevented some customers from shopping at first.
  • Shoppers have gobbled up Amazon’s own devices, like the Fire TV Stick, which was the top-selling item across the site globally. The Instant Pot, 23andMe DNA Test, and the LifeStraw rounded out the best sellers for the United States.
  • Glitches on Amazon’s website started immediately as Prime Day began on Monday, as it was presumably crushed under the strain of a horde of shoppers.

Amazon says Prime Day, its annual shopping event, hit new highs as early glitches failed to ruin the extravaganza.

On Wednesday, Amazon proclaimed 2018’s Prime Day its highest sales day ever.

Though technical glitches marred the start of Prime Day and prevented many customers from shopping on Monday afternoon, Amazon says this year’s event was beating last year’s as soon as 10 hours in.

“The first ten hours Prime Day grew even faster, year-over-year, than the first ten hours last year,” Amazon said in a press release on Tuesday.

Last year's Prime Day lasted 30 hours and began later in the day, with deals starting at 9 p.m. ET on July 10 and running through July 11. This year, the 36-hour event began at 3 p.m. on Monday and continued through Tuesday, lasting six hours longer than last year.

Amazon also released a list of the top-selling items from the event, including the Fire TV Stick, which was the top-selling item globally with "millions" sold during Prime Day. The Fire TV Stick cost only $20, its biggest discount ever. The Echo Dot, another Amazon device, was also a top seller, but it saw slightly weaker sales due to its deal that matched its Black Friday price.

Amazon said that Prime Day was its best sales day for both Amazon and smart home devices.

Amazon also sold more than 300,000 six-quart Instant Pots, and 150,000 LifeStraw personal water filters. Those two, along with the 23andMe DNA Test, rounded out the best sellers in the United States on Prime Day.

At Whole Foods, the best-selling Prime Day deal was organic strawberries.

The Instant Pot is a frequent bestseller on days like Prime Day when it is deeply discounted, as is the 23andMe test. However, the LifeStraw, a portable filter designed to make water safe to drink, is new to the list.

Prime Day kicked off at 3 p.m. on Monday, but shoppers reported experiencing issues within a few minutes of the sales beginning. Amazon later confirmed its website was having issues that left many unable to purchase items, though it didn't elaborate on the cause.

"Some customers are having difficulty shopping, and we're working to resolve this issue quickly," Amazon said in a statement posted on Twitter at 4:59 p.m.
