• Two of Boris Johnson's ministers dramatically quit his cabinet.
  • Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak and former Secretary of State for Health & Social Care Sajid Javid handed in their resignations.
  • The announcement could be a huge blow to Johnson's authority just weeks after he narrowly passed a confidence vote.

Two of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's ministers quit his cabinet Tuesday in a dramatic announcement that could be a huge blow to Johnson's authority.

Sajid Javid, the former Secretary of State for Health & Social Care, and Rishi Sunak, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced their resignations on Tuesday.

Sunak said in a letter to Johnson posted on his Twitter that he is not taking his decision to resign lightly.

"The public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously," Sunak wrote in his letter. "I recognise this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning."

Additionally, Javid said in a letter shared on his Twitter that it's been an "enormous privilege to serve in this role."

"But I regret that I can no longer continue in good conscience," he said.

Javid cited the "unprecedented scale of the challenges in health and social care" as the reason for his resignation, writing that he wants to "continue focusing on this important work."
